Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time there was a sweet little family of four. There was a Daddy and a stay-at-home-Mommy and a little girl and a baby boy. Life was happy and sweet and their plates were full.

The Daddy and Mommy always stayed very busy. The Daddy was climbing the career ladder at work and the Mommy stayed busy with the children and their many activities.

The little family had big dreams. They dreamed of building a big, beautiful home on the lot of their tiny 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. They dreamed of taking their two childen on exotic, international trips every summer. They dreamed of country club memberships and educating their children at the very best private schools in Atlanta. The Mommy dreamed of upholstered furniture and custom window treatments for each room of their home. The Daddy dreamed of a lake house and early retirement and expanding his stock portfolio.

And then one night in the midst of all this dreaming the Lord gripped our hearts

  1. Shelly this is a WONDERFUL post! I love seeing these amazing photos of your family. So beautiful– the story of God’s work in your lives and the faces of your children. I too am so grateful that God showed us there is more! Bless you and your precious family.

  2. I’ve read this three times now…. so powerful! thanks for sharing the way God graciously led your family – LOVE it!

Thank you for organizing this for the huge surprise that was the picture! How amazing! From the bottom of my heart, as a person who worries late at night about children like this…THANK YOU. I will sleep better tonight. Looking at those kids, the little girl twirling her purple dress (EVERY little girl deserves to twirl in a purple dress!), the boy’s eyes alight with happiness he never knew before…you just made my week. I cry at night, sometimes, worrying myself sick and praying for nameless, faceless children I will never meet. I have been told this is the life of a prayer warrior. Not sure about all that, but it’s what I do. Oh, thank you!

  4. I love this! Thank you for sharing the story of your beautiful family! Keep on living His heart… I know He is using this witness more than you will know this side of heaven!

  5. What a beautiful testimony of a life lived in abandon to the Lord! Your family is a living testimony of the joy of adoption, and I loved hearing your story. When I read this next sentence, I got chills, “If you’re clinging too tightly to your things, to your plans, to your comfort and convenience, to your idea of what your family should look like — God cannot move in your life.” So true, and so powerful! God always has so much more in store for us, but it almost always requires “stretching”, getting out of your comfort zone, and leaping out in faith to follow His will and plan for our lives. Through the whole process of going through a Domestic Infant Adoption, my heart has been stretched as much, if not more, as my belly had been during the pregnancies of our 3 older children. Elijah is truly a gift from the Lord, and I’m beyond grateful to the woman who carried him and chose to give him life. Blessings on your family, and may He continue to lead and guide you along this incredible journey.

  6. Wow, I am so blessed by your words. I pray that I will not hold so tightly to my own plans. Your family is beautiful!
